How does a search engine work? Search engine follows three basic steps to get results from web pages: 1. Crawling. 2. Indexing. 3. Serving or ranking. 1. Crawling: The first step is checking out what pages exist on the web. There’s not a central registry of all web content, therefore the search engine must constantly look for new pages and add them to its list of known pages. Some pages are known because search engines have already visited them before. Other pages are discovered when a search engine follows a link from a known page to a brand new page. Still, other pages are discovered when a website owner submits a listing of pages (a sitemap) for a search engine to crawl.
